The New Year is approaching fast. And every business owner should take some time out to strategize and develop an approach to what could be a promising year.
Most economic indicators are heading in the right direction – as contrasted with the end of 2008 going into 2009 – so there will be less if not any excuses for a successful 2010 for most businesses.

Are you and your team always running at a frantic pace but seem to be going nowhere as a company? Sometimes I get that feeling of frustration when I look at my day and notice that all I did was put out fires and was not able to accomplish the big picture items. Martin Zwilling nails it in the head with his post, “You Need Momentum, Not Just Motion”. Motion doesn’t really mean momentum, specially if everyone is moving in a different direction.

You might as well face it, Social Media is here to stay. In fact it’s not only the latest “In” tool, it’s quickly becoming a major component of the marketing plan in many corporations, big and small. I’d like to cover some basic myths – I like to call them nasty rumors – about Social Media. It’s not the scary monster under the bed that some people make it out to be.

Reading the article “Is your product a must have or a nice to have”, where Bernard Moon explains in great detail the difference between a “must have product” and a “nice to have” one, it made me think back to the earlier days of TheEyeWorks. Back then we were known as TheEyeCard, it was 2001 and, like today, the economy came to a screeching halt after the dot com debacle and 9/11.

Everyone is talking healthcare. It’s the hot topic of the season. Whichever side of the debate you are on, there are lessons we can learn as business people from this very important debate.
Listen to your constituents. The last thing you need is a town hall scene like the angry constituents we see today on TV. That’s why it is important to listen to your customers and be attentive to their concerns. A happy customer is one that feels their needs are being addressed.

So there I was minding my own business, when out of the blue I get an invitation to speak in front of hundreds of small business owners. Can you say “fear of public speaking” and “panic?” Actually I enjoy speaking in front of others, especially when it’s a topic that is near and dear to my business heart.

“Don’t try to be all things to all people.” It’s a simple concept, but many times overlooked. This thought is reinforced in a book that I am about to finish reading – Selling To Big Companies, by Jill Konrath. You can find out more information on the book at www.sellingtobigcompanies.com.

I heard that comment from a client last year. That got me to think that maybe a refresher summary on TheEyeWorks was in order. We are proud that TheEyeWorks has evolved into a fully integrated technology-based Web, Marketing and Public Relations agency. I give our clients some credit for this. As their business grew, we grew with them, and accordingly we added appropriate services to meet their business needs.

Everyone is talking about it. The stalling U.S. economy is on everyone’s mind.
If you are a business owner, the economy is hitting your business directly and maybe in a more personal way. I know many business owners that have seen their sales slow to a crawl. On top of dealing with day-to-day business operations, we must remain proactive in bringing in that elusive new customer. Making the phone ring or having new customers walk through our door should be a top priority of any serious entrepreneur.
