Some Basic Social Media Myths

You might as well face it, Social Media is here to stay. In fact it’s not only the latest “In” tool, it’s quickly becoming a major component of the marketing plan in many corporations, big and small. I’d like to cover some basic myths – I like to call them nasty rumors – about Social Media. It’s not the scary monster under the bed that some people make it out to be.

  1. I’m not a tech person, so I can’t use Social Media. Nonsense. Just about anyone, anywhere with something to say can and should use Social Media to get their message directly to people that need to hear it and benefit from it.
  2. It’s a fad and will soon go the way of bellbottoms. If I was texting I would LOL! Social Media is not going away. I’m amazed how its use has grown in such a short period of time. Like I said earlier, Social Media is here to stay so you might as well jump onboard. BTW, what are bellbottoms?
  3. I’m just one person, how can I compete with celebrities or big companies? The options that Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Blogs offer can help you build your followers or audience. Simply find a focus, have a clear message and offer something new and different that your audience or customers want to hear about. One person can have up to hundreds of thousands of followers and that’s a powerful base to build on.
  4. I can do it all by myself. Well good luck. Let’s face it, you’re a business owner or manager that should concentrate on your business. You are not a Social Media expert, or SEO expert or a Web designer for that matter. Do what you do best - running your business. You should partner with a reputable and knowledgeable agency that takes your business interests to heart. In other words you need a Social Media coach that can point out opportunities and help you take advantage of them.
  5. All I need is killer design.  Yes, you do need original and eye-popping design. But that’s not all you need. Your site, Blog and other online marketing tools need great content. It’s about quality, not quantity. Quality of design AND content. This is how you engage your audience or customers: give them new information, something to think about and a way to respond to what you are saying. Through the exchange of new or provocative ideas you gain a loyal customer, a possible new customer and a great reputation with your virtual audience.
